Two U Professors Honored as 2018 AAAS Fellows

University of Utah professors Shelley Minteer and Glenn Prestwich are among the 416 newly-elected Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of 科学 (AAAS). Election as a Fellow is an honor bestowed upon AAAS members by their peers.

AAAS members have been awarded this honor because of their scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications. Minteer and Prestwich join 126 other Fellows either currently or formerly affiliated with the U, including Nobel laureate Mario Capecchi and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Dan Reed. The U's first Fellow was geologist and former 大学 president James Talmage, elected in 1906.

New Fellows will be presented with a gold and blue (representing science and engineering, 星期六分别)玫瑰胸针, 2月16日, 2019 during the 2019 AAAS Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. Fellows will also be announced in the AAAS News & 日志的注释部分 科学 2018年11月29日.

Minteer was elected for "fundamental and applied contributions to electrochemistry, including electrocatalytic cascades and natural and artificial metabolons for biofuel cells."

Minteer's career has focused on using nature as an inspiration and solution to chemistry problems. Her work has resulted in 17 issued patents and over 300 peer-reviewed publications in using biology as inspiration for biosensing, 能量储存, 能量转换, 和电合成.

"As we start to think about renewable energy sources, 不管是太阳能还是风能, we need to think about how we store that energy for when the sun doesn't shine and the wind doesn't blow,她说. Her research group focuses on nature-inspired catalytic cascades of reactions that store energy in chemical bonds.

“如果你看看生物系统, biology does 能量转换 extremely efficiently, so we are using that 能量转换 machinery to improve the efficiency of electrochemical 能量转换 devices她说.

Minteer feels honored by her election as a AAAS fellow, the latest in a long line of chemists from the U.

Prestwich was elected for "entrepreneurial uses of chemistry to solve biological problems, 包括防治病虫害, 细胞信号中的脂质, and hyaluronan materials for regenerative medicine and inflammation."

近50年来, Prestwich's career has been about encountering problems in biology and medicine and innovating solutions to them with chemistry. His work has resulted in over 40 issued patents, 650篇同行评议论文, commercialization of research tools for drug discovery in cancer, and the development of biomaterials for cell therapy, wound healing and the prevention of post-surgical adhesions. "The perspective that I bring is that of an organic chemist who helps biologists and physicians solve problems in research and clinical care,普雷斯特维奇说, an emeritus presidential professor of Medicinal Chemistry.

达雷尔R. 戴维斯, chair of the Department of Medicinal Chemistry at the College of Pharmacy describes Prestwich as a "generalist" chemist and a consummate collaborator. "He has delivered the benefits of synthetic organic chemistry to biologists for his entire career,他说. "The award is validation of support for fundamental research and fostering an environment that enables talented researchers to commercialize their discoveries for the benefit of patients."

Prestwich has been one of the University of Utah's most successful and prolific entrepreneurs. Along with mentoring over 150 graduate students, 博士后科学家, 以及客座教授, Prestwich identifies "a seminal moment" in his outstanding career as creating and directing the first entrepreneurial faculty scholar program at a U.S. 大学. 成立于2007年, this unique group at the University of Utah promotes collaboration across disciplines, the translation of academic discoveries into products that improve people's lives, and the mentoring of faculty and student entrepreneurs.

Prestwich says his election as an AAAS fellow "is exciting and an honor for not just me personally, but in recognition of University of Utah Medicinal Chemistry, the College of Pharmacy and the University of Utah."

The tradition of AAAS Fellows began in 1874. 目前, members can be considered for the rank of Fellow if nominated by the steering groups of the Association's 24 sections, or by any three Fellows who are current AAAS members (so long as two of the three sponsors are not affiliated with the nominee's institution), 或由美国科学促进会首席执行官负责. Fellows must have been continuous members of AAAS for four years by the end of the calendar year in which they are elected. AAAS Fellow's lifetime honor comes with an expectation that recipients maintain the highest standards of professional ethics and scientific integrity.

Each steering group reviews the nominations of individuals within its respective section and a final list is forwarded to the AAAS Council, 谁在总名单上投票.
